APPLICATION GUIDELINES

Eligibility:
1. The 41st Annual Palm Beach Opera Vocal Competition is open to all United States, Mexican or Canadian citizens, permanent residents and international students with valid USCIS F or O visa in two divisions: Junior (ages 18-23) and Advanced (ages 24-30). Contestants must meet age requirements on the date of the finalist competition for that year.
2. Previous first and second place winners are NOT eligible to re-apply in that division. Contestants who have participated three (3) times in one division are NOT eligible to re-apply.
Competition Dates: April 22 – 25, 2010
3. Semi-Finals Advanced Division: April 22, 2010
Semi-Finals Junior Division: April 23, 2010
Grand Finals with Palm Beach Opera Orchestra Adv and Jun Divisions: April 25, 2010
Competition Finalists will be announced at the conclusion of both division semi-final competitions. Finalists will meet on April 25, 2009 to rehearse for the Grand Finals Concert. A rehearsal with the Palm Beach Opera Orchestra is scheduled for the morning of April 25, 2010.
The Grand Finals Concert will take place at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 25, 2010. Winners will be announced at the conclusion of the concert, and awards will be distributed at that time. Contestants who are not available for the Grand Finals concert should not apply.
Application:
4. APPLY ONLINE! Follow the instructions at www.pbopera.org and you won’t have to worry about any paperwork. Upload your resume, music files and scanned proof of age, as well as pay on-line via secure server for an easy application experience.
If you prefer a traditional paper application, follow the instructions below:
The application must be completely filled out and signed by the applicant. Do not refer to resume. The application form must be accompanied by two (2) contrasting arias which ere to be submitted electronically via email*.
Applicant must include a $40.00 non-refundable application fee, one (1) black and white 8" X 10" photograph and a copy of legal proof of age and citizenship (e.g. passport, birth certificate, driver’s license w/any applicable visa, etc). Checks should be made payable to Palm Beach Opera, Inc. You may also pay online via secure server.
* Attach (2) contrasting arias in mp3 format to an e-mail message addressed to vocalcompetition@pbopera.org. Music files must be labeled using the following format: • YourLastName_FirstName_AriaTitle.MP3. Please do not send more than two arias. A confirmation email will be supplied. Files sent by email will only be evaluated if/once all other required documents and payment are received by mail.
Deadline: all materials must be received by JANUARY 31, 2010. Late applications will not be processed.
All applications will be evaluated by a screening committee. Applicants will be notified as to their acceptance status via e-mail only. Such notification shall be e-mailed no later than March 10, 2010. All applications are considered confidential.

Repertoire:
6. Semi-Finalists must be prepared to sing four (4) operatic arias from memory.
A. One 18th century aria (e.g. Gluck, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven)
B. Two arias from standard repertoire (e.g. Mozart, Donizetti, Rossini, Verdi, Wagner)
C. One aria from 20th century (e.g. Debussy, Richard Strauss, Floyd, Menotti)
ALL ARIAS MUST BE SUNG IN ORIGINAL LANGUAGE AND KEY. Exceptions may be made for standard transpositions (e.g. “La Calunnia” from the Barber of Seville, key of C major rather than D major). Of the four arias, the contestant may choose the first aria. The judges may request other arias listed on the application. Any changes in competition repertoire must be submitted by April 1, 2010. The decision of the judges is final.
Repertoire for the Grand Finals Concert will be chosen from submitted repertoire list in discussion with conductor of Grand Finals Concert. Availability of orchestral scores may be a determining factor for final repertoire.
 
Miscellaneous:
7. An accompanist will be provided at no charge. Rehearsal time with the competition accompanist is limited and subject to scheduling restrictions. Contestants may choose to bring their own pianist at their own expense.
8. All competition winners agree to appear in one performance of a Palm Beach Opera production or concert without fees, not including the Grand Finals concert.
9. All applicants acknowledge that performances may be recorded for archival purposes and for broadcast via live-stream. Detailed information will follow at a later date.
10. Awards may be forfeited for supplying false or incorrect information and/or failure to comply with competition rules.
11. All contestants and winners are responsible for their own travel and lodging expenses. All contestants will receive modest travel stipend.
12. Judges for the 41st Annual Palm Beach Opera Vocal Competition will be announced as they become available.
